Ministerial meeting on environmental challenges in Baltic Sea

News: Aug 31, 2010

Sweden hosted a ministerial meeting on the Baltic Sea environment on 25 August. Ministers and high-ranking representatives from all the Baltic Sea states attended the seminar, "Building marine policy on best available knowledge", which was arranged by the Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment at Rosenbad in Stockholm. The meeting was the first to take place under the Swedish chairmanship of the Baltic Sea cooperation body HELCOM, the Helsinki Commission for the protection of the Baltic Marine Environment.

The seminar was attended by 80 participants and speakers from HELCOM's member countries. Swedish Environment Minister Andreas Carlgren also presented the priorities of the Swedish chairmanship, as well as proposals on how the cooperation via HELCOM can be developed to tackle the environmental challenges of the Baltic Sea. The Swedish Environment Minister was also joined by ministers from Finland, Poland, Latvia and Estonia in a panel discussion on how HELCOM and other ongoing processes should deliver and monitor measures that are being implemented.
