DYNAMITE – Dynamic decision support for transformative marine spatial planning

The green transition is increasing demand for marine space for activities such as shipping, energy production and fisheries. At the same time, the use of the sea needs to remain within ecologically sustainable boundaries. Today, data and knowledge about the marine environment are dispersed among different actors, and stronger links are needed between marine spatial planning, environmental monitoring and marine environmental management.
In DYNAMITE, researchers will work together with public authorities, maritime sectors and other stakeholders to integrate data, models and methods and develop dynamic decision support for Swedish marine spatial planning. Using the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management’s planning tool Symphony as a starting point, the project will enable the analysis of different future scenarios and assessment of the cumulative ecological and socio-economic impacts of human activities and climate change. Particular attention will be given to the environmental pressures from shipping, which are currently not fully integrated into marine spatial planning.
The aim is to provide public authorities and other decision-makers with better evidence for balancing different interests and planning how marine resources can be used while protecting the marine environment. Among other things, the project will produce new data on pressures from different sectors, compile and make environmental monitoring data more accessible, and further develop Symphony to enable the assessment of different development scenarios.
